Watch 26th MTV Video Music Awards 2009 Winners. MTV is bringing the celeb-powered, anything-might-happen craziness back to New York for the 26th annual MTV Video Music Awards on September 13 at 9 p.m. ET. Russell Brand, comedian will host the live show, taking place at some of the city's most iconic locations, including Radio City Music Hall.

2009 Video Music Awards incident

  • During the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Kanye West came on stage and took the microphone from Taylor Swift during her acceptance speech for winning Best Female Video for "You Belong with Me", saying that Beyonce's video for "Single Ladies", nominated for the same award, was "one of the best videos of all time," an action that caused the audience in the venue to respond with boos and catcalls. He handed the microphone back to a stunned and reportedly upset Swift, who did not finish her acceptance speech. When Beyoncé later won the award for Best Video of the Year for "Single Ladies," she called Swift up on stage so that she could finish her acceptance speech. West later apologized for his verbal outburst.
  • Madonna opened the show talking about her experiences with Michael Jackson. After her speech, Janet Jackson paid tribute to her late brother by performing their duet, "Scream". The show closed with a sneak preview of Michael Jackson's "This Is It" movie.
  • At the 2009 ceremony Lady Gaga gave a controversial performance of her new single "Paparazzi". During the performance, she simulated being crushed by a chandelier, bleeding, and the end of the performance appeared to hang herself. When she won the Video for "Best New Artist," she dedicated the award to "God and the Gays."
