Typhoon "Pepeng": Hits northeastern Luzon, 4 people killed. Typhoon "Pepeng" hits the areas in northeastern Luzon shrouded into darkness, unleashed its wrath, carrying strong winds that killed at least four people, displaced hundreds, destroyed agricultural crops, and made major thoroughfares impassable beginning Saturday afternoon.

In Cagayan, at least 6,236 people in 39 barangays (villages) were affected, while P20.33 million worth of agricultural produce were destroyed after Pepeng, the 16th weather disturbance that hit the country made landfall in the province at 3 p.m. The information came from Cagayan police chief Moro Virgilio Lazo.

Pepeng packed maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 210 kph, making it the strongest typhoon that battered the country in three years.

“Chaos" was all over Cagayan, according to Aileen Torres, provincial administrator of the Philippine National Red Cross. “The winds and rains are so strong. Power is out and we are relying on generators," she said.
